A Word From Our President

I was about to speak at True Vine Baptist Church in Oakland California that Tuesday evening. As I walked from my hotel to a nearby store, I noticed a fine looking elderly woman. I spoke as I came near and was shocked when she begged for change for a place to stay. She looked like she could be one of the leading ladies in church! Whether one of the ladies in the church where I’d just spoken, my home church, or one of the countless numbers of Ushers, Deaconess’, Choir members, Women’s Guild members or Mothers I had known. I gave her the money she asked for, then demanded to know the whereabouts of her children and family. That began a process of months, which reunited a broken family and got her on a waiting list for Low-Income Senior Housing.

And, hopefully how we may serve you. As a young minister in 1986 when we began, I couldn’t have dreamed that the need would one day become so great. Affordable housing was then, for the few who fell through the cracks. Now, the entire floor is almost gone.

Recently, as we prepared a multi-million dollar renovation of our 81 unit facility in Fontana California, I was surprised to hear the testimony of a lady who sat on our “waiting list”. She had waited for three years before receiving a call via her mobile phone informing her of a vacancy. She was already packed and ready to move in, because she was living in her car! Noticing my surprise she told me of other residents who had experienced the same thing. It underscored for me, how desperate things have become in the streets of America. Many “regular” people are now on the streets. At the end of 2018 there were 552,830 homeless people in America. Our home state of California had 129,972 of them. It’s not a great stretch to realize that the lack of “affordable housing” leaves them only one step before homelessness.

Thankfully, there are amazing opportunities to help. You can help and, we can help you help others. Our staff have added to our thirty years experience, (1) a mastery of the most recent laws and H.U.D. rules. (2) We’ve spent years now connecting with the absolutely essential specialized legal experts. (3) We’ve developed over the past few years relationships with the key funding institutions who specialize in affordable housing, and (4) with the federal government sources. (5) State government sources for the necessary state approvals and state regulatory guidelines are among the multiple nuanced pathways that we’ve invested in learning. (6) Specialized contractors and regulations governing them have also been put in place for expediting new projects.

Our Missions and your Mission have become ONE MISSION.

Cascades Sonrise offers even more ways to help you accomplish your Mission and help others among the hundreds and thousands of helpless people all around you. We are called to go “across the street and across the world”, wherever the hurting are.
